National Milk Day holds a special place in the heart of every Indian, commemorating the birth anniversary of the visionary Dr. Verghese Kurien, the "Father of the White Revolution," whose pioneering efforts transformed India into the largest producer of milk in the world. On November 26, 2024, the International Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (IIVER), Haryana, had the honor of hosting Dr. Alka Sharma, a distinguished academician and Professor of Food Technology at Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST), Hisar, as the Chief Guest for its National Milk Day celebrations. Dr. Sharma’s enlightening presence and inspiring words were the highlight of the event. Her extensive knowledge, coupled with her warm and engaging personality, left an indelible mark on everyone present.

Dr. Alka Sharma: A Journey of Academic and Professional ExcellenceDr. Alka Sharma’s remarkable career reflects her dedication to the fields of food technology and nutrition. A proud alumna of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCS HAU), Hisar, Dr. Sharma completed her Bachelor’s in Home Science in 1987, followed by her Master’s in Foods and Nutrition in 1989.
She then achieved her doctorate in 1994, cementing her position as an expert in her domain.Her professional journey began as a Senior Research Fellow at CCS HAU, contributing to ICAR projects on pearl millet and advancing nutritional research. Progressing through roles as a Research Associate, Lecturer, and Associate Professor, Dr. Sharma has been a Professor at GJUST since 2011, where she also served two terms as Chairperson of the Department of Food Technology. Dr. Sharma’s scholarly contributions are noteworthy, with an impressive 34 publications in international journals, 42 in national journals, 17 book chapters, and 8 popular articles.
Her research papers, presented at 34 national and international conferences, reflect her commitment to advancing knowledge in her field. Her dedication has earned her numerous accolades, including: HAU Merit Gold Medal for securing the highest marks in B.Sc. C.K. Lamba Gold Medal and the distinction of being an ICAR Junior Fellowship Holder in her Master’s program. Qualification of prestigious eligibility tests like UGC/ASRB NET and SLET by Kurukshetra University.

Dr. Sharma’s professional affiliations include memberships in esteemed organizations like the Nutrition Society of India, the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India), and the Association of Microbiologists of India. She is also the founder and life member of the Association of Home Scientists for State and Agricultural Universities, exemplifying her leadership in the academic community.
